Measured performance in a lived-in load-bearing straw bale home

The recording of Accessible by Nature – Inclusion, Health and Measured Performance is now available to watch.
Presented by Straw Building UK in collaboration with SEDA (Scottish Ecological Design Association), the webinar explored monitored performance in a lived-in load-bearing straw bale home in England.
Drawing on a 14-month building performance evaluation conducted by the Mackintosh Environmental Architecture Research Unit at The Glasgow School of Art, the session examined indoor environmental quality, temperature stability and relative humidity under real living conditions.
Janice Foster presented findings from the monitored dataset, while Sam Foster reflected on the architectural approach behind the project, including materials selection, accessibility and building services decisions.
The discussion also addressed wider questions around buildability, regulation, health and the role of measured performance in supporting the wider adoption of straw construction.
